The history of this first name comes from the city of Jakarta which was once a port of the Sunda Kingdom located at the mouth of the Ciliwung River. Sunda Kelapa became the entry point for various trade goods brought by foreign ships from China, Japan, South India, and the Middle East which were then exchanged for spices which were hunted by various countries.
The name Jayakarta was given by Fatahillah, a figure who succeeded in expelling the Portuguese who had occupied the port of Sunda Kelapa. Jayakarta itself means "city of victory". This city is called by the name of Jayakarta starting from 1527-1619.
After the Portuguese, the Dutch came to Jayakarta at the end of the 16th century. The leader of the Dutch trading company, the VOC, succeeded in occupying Jayakarta after defeating troops from the Sultanate of Banten. Led by Jan Pieterszoon Coen, the name Jayakarta was changed to Stad Batavia or better known as Batavia.

After changing its name to Kotapraja Djakarta, a few years later there was a slight name change by adding the word "Raya" behind it using the old spelling. So the name of the capital city at that time was Kotapraja Djakarta Raja.
