Minke’s love for Annelies, making him experience endless inner struggles. Minke is a native Javanese young ma,. While Annelies, an Indo Dutch girl, is a child of Nyai.

Minke’s father, who had just been appointed as Regent, never agreed that Minke is close to the Nyai family, because Nyai's position at that time is considered to be as low as a pet. But Nyai Ontosoroh (Ine Febriyanti), Annelies mother, is different. Minke admires all thoughts and her struggles against the arrogance of colonial hegemony.

For Minke, Nyai Ontosoroh is a reflection of modernization which at that time was starting its movement. When the arrogance of colonial law try to snatch away Annelies from Minke's side, Nyai Ontosoroh also blow spirits up so that Minke would go ahead and cry one word, "Fight!"

The betrayal of Hardo's fiance's father, compared to the betrayal of his best friend Karmin; the Dipo and Kartiman resistance is compared to the Hardo resistance; the cruelty of war and the ego of the invaders, a Shidokan Nippon compared to the fall of the war victims of a father Hardo and Ningsih, the hope of the motherland.
