The red lake or Tiwu Ata Polo is a gathering place for the souls of the dead who during their lifetime did evil things such as witchcraft. Meanwhile, the white lake, or Tiwu Ata Mbupu is a gathering place for the souls of parents who have died. But in fact, the LIPI research team concluded that the changing colors of the three Kelimutu Lakes were the result of volcanic mechanisms in the area.
